On 17 June, harp student Wilson Delgado (aged 18) flew to Europe – an amazing once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity, paid for by a Swedish donor. First he spent a week in England, where he joyfully met up again with his old friends, the former volunteers Suzie Hance, Stephen Dunne, Alice Gimblett and Dorota Sakwerda. Then he flew on to Sweden, where he is a participant in the international festival of young musicians called Ethno (25 June – 3 July).
Wilson is the son of a single mother who is a teacher from deep in the countryside of Ñeembucú – a couple of days’ journey from Santa María on dirt roads; his father has never acknowledged him. Wilson came to live with his uncle in Santa Maria five years ago, so as to go to secondary school, and has taken good advantage of the English classes and harp classes we offer. His mother wrote this beautiful and moving message as Wilson set off (and now we know where he gets his talent from):
“For a mother. her children never grow up. We always want to protect them and before we know it they have become adults. Today my only son, just when winter is about to begin, has turned into a swallow and is flying to Europe – to Sweden. My heart beats faster, and it only remains to me to wish my beloved son a good journey and a safe return. I love you very much.” (Nélida Delgado Meza)
